The detonation of an atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945 was one of the most horrific events in the history of the world. Equivalent to 20,000 kilotons of TNT, the atomic bomb known as ‘Little Boy’ was launched from the B-29 bomber, Enola Gay. The bomb destroyed two thirds of Hiroshima, an estimated 70,000 civilians dying immediately followed by the death of an additional 70,000 as a result of radiation poisoning over the course of the following five years. All that remained of those closest to the blast were shadows imprinted on buildings.</div>

The world watched on in horror as two hijacked planes crashed into the twin towers of the world trade centre on September 11, 2001. American Airlines Boeing 767 crashed into the north tower first, killing hundreds of people instantly and trapping hundreds above the 80th floor. Exactly 18 minutes later, a second plane crashed into the south tower. Following this, an additional plane crashed into the west side of the Pentagon. The attackers were militants associated with the Islamic extremist group Al-Qaeda reportedly seeking revenge for America’s support of Israel, as well as its role in the Persian Gulf War and its military presence in the Middle East. Over 3,000 people were killed in the terror attacks of September 11th, 2001, among those over 400 firefighters and police officers.</div>

The Nazis, who rose to power in Germany in 1933, saw Jews as racially inferior. As part of the ‘Final Solution’ the Nazis killed 2 out of every 3 Jews. Their eugenics movement aimed to stop the weak from procreating. The barbaric means by which this was carried out was compulsory sterilisation, segregation or institutionalisation of anyone deemed to be unfit. Ultimately, eugenics became an umbrella under which ethnic genocide could be justified in Nazi Germany. It was a devastating period of the twentieth century.</div>

Burnett states that the civil war broke out as a result of a coup by the Rwandan Patriotic Front in an attempt to defeat the Hutu led government. The Hutu retaliated and the ensuing civil war that took place meant that a staggering percentage of the country was killed during the genocide in the East African State. The number affected is estimated to be somewhere in the region of five hundred thousand to over one million. As is the case in all wars, both sides were complicit in the mass murdering of Rwandan citizens and as such, both the Hutu’s and the Tutsi’s must be held accountable.</span></div>

In 1982, she lodged a rape case against “Eat Bulaga!” hosts Joey de Leon, Vic Sotto, and Richie D’Horsie (also known as Richie Reyes). Paloma’s lawyer in the rape case was a much younger Rene Cayetano who would later be elected as a Philippine senator. The rape case was settled out of court. Afterwards, she stated that she was coerced to sign an affidavit of desistance by Tito Sotto (another “Eat Bulaga!” co-host and a future Philippine senator) to drop the case which had a punishment of death. De Leon, Vic Sotto and D’Horsie admitted guilt and made a public apology to Paloma.</div>

Working with guerrillas south of Tacloban, Miss Fernandez rounded up native men to resist the Japanese. She commanded 110 native who killed more than 200 Japanese with knifes and shotguns made from sections of gas pipe. The Japanese offered 10.000 pesos for her head. She was wounded once. There is a bullet scar on her right forearm.<br /><br />Filipinos call that weapon a bolo, basically a long knife. The primary use for the bolo is clearing vegetation, whether for agriculture or during trail blazing. Because of its availability, the bolo became a common choice of improvised weaponry to the everyday peasant, especially during the Japanese occupation. There is a rich tribal history in Filipino culture of beheading enemies and doing rituals with their head. In the Northern province of Luzon, headhunter warriors are tattooed to represent their successful enemy headhunts. This headhunting still went on during WWII, instead of using guns Filipino warriors would hide in the forests and ambush the Japanese. They would bring back their heads to their tribe and do a black magic ceremony with it and put their heads on a spike to ward off future attacks. Even today the Philippines government fear these Northern tribal lands.</span></div>

The ''battleship'' was 240 feet long, 160 feet wide, and 40 feet above the water line. The walls were 30-40 feet thick and the deck 20 feet deep. Inside, there were four levels connected by an axial tunnel running through the island.</div>

Beginning Jan. 25, when the Usaffe was ensconced in Bataan, the Japanese began emplacing artillery pieces in Ternate, Cavite, to shell the island forts. The battery, commanded by Maj. Toshinori Kondo, commenced shelling on Feb. 5 with four 105-mm guns and two 150-mm howitzers. The prime target on the first day was Fort Drum, which was hit 100 times without effect.</div>

But while Kondo's fire was slackening, the Japanese were emplacing 10 240-mm howitzers in the Pico de Loro hills in Calumpang, Cavite, close to Fort Frank. This new artillery detachment under Maj. Masayoshi Hayakawa started unleashing deadly shells against the four islands on March 15.</div>

But the guns of Fort Drum were never silenced, affording the defenders much needed protection.</div>

Japanese shellings and bombings intensified on April 29, Emperor Hirohito's birthday. To get rid of the pesky guns of Fort Drum, the Japanese subjected the fort to a glide-bombing attack which effected only a minor misalignment of Battery Marshall. The intense bombing-shelling continued for the next four days.</div>

Liberation</div>

The Americans returned on Oct. 20, 1944, and started the liberation of the Philippines. By Feb. 3, 1945, a flying column had reached Manila and a month-long battle liberating Manila from the Japanese ensued.</div>

While the battle of Manila was raging, the Americans started clearing the fortified islands of Japanese to open Manila Bay for shipping. Fort Drum was the last to be liberated.</div>

To liberate Fort Drum, which was impregnable to gunfire, the Americans devised special tactics. On Friday, April 13, a Landing Ship Medium (LSM) pulled up alongside Fort Drum and discharged two platoons of soldiers by means of a specially built ramp on top of the LSM. One platoon consisted of crack snipers to cover every opening where Japanese soldiers may appear. The other platoon comprised engineers assigned to plant demolition charges.</div>

When the charges were in place, a Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM) that had also sidled alongside the fort poured 3,000 gallons of oil into one of the vents while explosives were dumped into another vent. The fuses were lit, and the LCM and LSM moved to a safe distance. The charges were detonated, resulting in a series of explosions that hurled Fort Drum's one-ton, one-meter diameter manhole cover 50 meters straight up into the air.</div>
